Stuart has a passion to bring atmosphere and drama to his work, working predominantly in Oils and Acrylics. Working from photographs, sketches and imagination stuart looks for the “extreme” moments in nature. Steering away from a natural palette, often introducing bolder tones to achieve a unique signature look in each piece.

A member of the Eden Valley Artist Network, a collective of artists, organisations and venues based in the North Lakes and Eden Valley whose aim is to bring art and local artists to an audience. Stuart finds his inspiration everywhere, from the marshes and UK coastline to the fells, moors and mountains of his beloved Cumbria. Stuart says:

I rarely paint exactly what I see unless I am blessed with the light I crave.
Painting for me is all about the light

A Break in the Clouds

Although based upon a real view from Casterigg near Keswick , this is really about my memory of the view.  As always,  I like to put a little spin into my work so I introduced a little peak of the sun itself to act as a spotlight on the distant fields. 60 x 50 cm - A Limited Edition Giclee Print of /50 - Uk Postage is included..

Blencathra From Matterdale Common

We had just returned from a fabulous and very hot holiday in the Italian Lakes, next morning dawned with a good forecast so decided we would have a walk in our own Lake District and opted to try a route we had never walked before. It was one of Wainwrights routes over Matterdale common to St Johns in the Vale. Not the most scenic of walks as it is mostly over wetland and moor, weather was close and..

Breaking Light Ullswater

Oils on canvas board- 20x 16 inches:This painting is inspired from a hike by the artist above Howtown bay in Febuary 2019. A fresh fall of snow had brightened an otherwise leaden sky. Suddenly light broke through, casting an orange glow over the distant fells Dramatic light after a storm is not unusual, but breaking out while the sky was still heavy with snow clouds is not that common, at lea..

Brough of Birsay - Orkney Isles

Early Morning at Rockcliffe

Rockcliffe church spire stands dark against the strong morning sunlight. This iconic village lays adjacent to the Rockcliffe salt marsh at Sandsfield where the mighty River Eden joins the solway firth a little further downstream. This is one of my favourite places to paint, I love the wild desolate landscape which can be so bleak and intimidating, yet it experiences some amazing light shows and be..

I loved the composition of the sunlit lane and the large tree standing against..

Great Corby in Winter

Snow falls are not that common nowadays, apart from the odd hard winter now and again. So it was nice to be around to capture this little scene of 2 dog walkers climbing the hill out of the village. The light was just perfect, a gap in the trees by the Castle gates provided a lovely shaft of warm light that contrasted beautifully with the cool shadows.Image Size: 40cm x 30cmA Limited Edition Giclee..

Poppies in Early Morning Sunlight

My daughter in law was up before dawn to take a photograph of a field of poppies in the Eden Valley, which is not that common a sight nowadays.
